Since its founding in 1970, the Macoupin County Historical Society has passionately preserved and celebrated the rich heritage of Carlinville and the surrounding region. At its heart is the beautifully restored John C. Anderson Mansion—also known as the Anderson Mansion Museum—built in 1883 and expanded in 1892. This architectural gem blends Italianate, Queen Anne, and Stick–Style design, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 5, 1992
But history lives beyond the mansion. On the museum grounds, you’ll discover a delightfully authentic village: a one‑room schoolhouse, working blacksmith shop, rural church, country store, print shop, sawmill, herb garden, and barns filled with farm machinery—all lovingly restored thanks to local volunteers and generous donors
