CARLINVILLE

The county seat of Macoupin County, this is a bustling city that is a mixture of the revered older buildings and institutions and the modern, a variety of local industry and manufacturing, with a heavy agricultural influence and a population over 5,000 souls. The first settlers were of course Indians––Black Hawk, Kickapoo, Kaskaskia and Illini, with settlements and burial grounds not far from Beaver Dam State Park southwest of the city, an old Indian footpath found along the west side of Coop’s Mound, six miles northeast of own, used by the Illini, and Wolfs Mound, a sylvan setting with a pure mountain spring used by Indians, now the site of the town of Bunker Hill.
