There is a discrepancy over which Sawyer the village was named after. It is known that Josiah and Hannah (Sykes) Sawyer from Tyrrell County North Carolina settled the area around October 1831 and that Thomas Sawyer later sold is his land to the Superior Coal Company for the purpose of mining.
