The village of Scottville was laid out in 1835 by Benjamin Stephenson and the proprietors of
the town were Jefferson Weatherford and Tristram P. Hoxsey. The first postmaster was Sargeant
Gobble who came from Washington County, Virginia to Scottville in 1838. He was a successful
merchant and landowner and eventually built a home modeled on Abraham Lincoln’s in Spring
