The Village of Summerville was laid out in 1852 by J.H. Williams, who came to Macoupin Coun
ty from New York in 1837, and other early settlers assisted. The streets were named by William
Carson. Mail first came to Summerville before 1850. With the railroad going through Medora,
most trade was diverted there; consequently, Summerville did not grow as anticipated so a busi
ness district never developed. . .
